    Steering clearance problem

    Fun with conversions

After putting in my R&P steering conversion I have a clearance problem with the block. The rack is from an early commodore, the engine is an RB20 and the car is an EH Holden.

    Please see pics:

The distance between the pinion shaft and the edge of the block is about 10mm.

This is what is meant to connect to the pinion shaft, of course it is fatter than 10mm:

I have thought of a couple of ideas:

    * Space the block across to the passenger side - not desired because of existing clearance problems.
    * Make a longer pinion shaft - looks difficult and/or expensive.
    * Make some sort of slender adaptor - looks difficult and/or expensive.

Can someone suggest a way to get around this?

A bit of searching and I located this connector:

Seem to be used in the US in rods and race cars. Can anyone suggest where I might find something like this in oz?

To be perfectly honest, you will either need to rotate the whole rack so it clears, and use some more interesting steering uni joints, or change the type of rack...

hmmm I don't really like the sound of either of those options

I can't decide whether to swear or cry.

sucks dude....do you mind if I have a look at it in real life again? might have inspiration....

The problem with runnning things so close is the torque shift of the motor means it will probably rub and bump it

I know you've already manufactured engine mounts, but could you lift the engine a bit to create more clearance?

              Please come and look!

The problem with lifting the engine more is that the gearbox tunnel is tight - really tight. So if I want to maintain an angle of 5-6 degrees then I have to start chopping more bits out of the tunnel.

The rear of the gearbox needs to come up about 50mm and across by about 5mm. So both of these will make my situation better but only by a few mm.

I have also thought I might be able to fit a uni right close to the steering housing to angle the intermediate shaft away at a greater angle. I was thinking of a hot rod/racing uni because they are generally really compact.

The more I look at the pictures, the more I am convinced you need to rotate the rack slightly....

I'll rock up tonight if you like...

                  That would be great.
