    Speedometer Cable Replacement?

The core inside my speedo cable has snapped about 2" above the gearbox & I was wondering if its possible to get a new core for it, or if the whole cable must be replaced?

you can get just the core but often the outer sheath is worn on the inside and just replacing the inner cable means it will fail again in a short time.

my outer is in perfect condition basically i just didn't know how to get the inner core out of it... or is it completely a 'drop in cable & have it fixed' kinda job due to specialty tools needed??

Depends what car we are talking about here, as to whether or not the inner cable is replaceable or not. In my case, a broken cable on a R32 Skyline required the replacement of the whole cable.

If you can't figure out how to get the cable out, then I would suspect its a 'whole cable' replacement.

I suggest you have a chat to an instrument maker (check the Yellow Pages) to determine if they can repair the cable for you.

generally the inner cable is removed from the gearbox end, not from the speedo end.

you cannot tell what the outer is like by looking at it, as its the inside running surface that is in contention here.

I had to replace the complete shabang when mine broke.

Thanks for the replies Its off a CA18DE FWD gearbox (out of a KN13 Exa) for anyone wondering. I can't push it through the speedo gauge end so I am guessing its probably a whole cable replacement. I'll make some enquiries tomorrow. All your help is appreciated
