    Seatbelts & Buckles Legalities

    Hey all

well im thinking of changing my seatbelts and buckles in my HX Kingswood to ones from say a VN commodore, would this be legal?
Im not sure if they will fit but if they do is it legal? keeping in mind i want to change the seatbelts, buckles and rolly thingy .
Main reason for changing them is becuase they are craptacular and it is hard to buckle yourself in as you have to jiggle and jiggle till it clicks.

    cheers

    Ian

As long as the pickup points are the same as standard, I cant see a problem.

    Hope that helps,

May not be legal, but certainly smart (which would probably make it illegal, judging by how some of the rulemakers think )

Pickup point is where it bolts to the car.

Make sure you buy new ones too. No 2nd hand stuff.

Seatbelts and their legalities are a bit of a sore point for me... My car came from the factory with a very early version of the lap/sash seatbelt, where the standard narrow lap belt (with a buckle of matching size) on an inertia reel was supplemented with a wider (what we would now call standard width) sash belt which hung from the ceiling of the vehicle.

I want to get my belts re-done so that they will suit the colour of my soon-to-be-re-done interior, and so that they are new. I have found out during my investigations that if I want to do this, the only way I can maintain my existing set-up (so I can keep all my original buckles, complete with Fisher Body emblems) is to find NOS belts from the US ($$$, if I can even get them). If I want to get belts mate to suit locally, I have to ditch the narrower lap belt and replace it with one that's full width. This annoys me a bit.

The other option is to dye the existing belts, which will achieve the same aesthetic outcome, but won't enhance the safety of them, as they are the original items factory-fitted to the car in 1969, and as one would expect, are not in perfect nick...

I can't really see what an extra 20mm of lap belt width is going to achieve, but anyway... As usual, the logic of the law makers leaves much to be desired.

Ranting Tex, I know you're absolutely more likely to have tried more places than I'll think of ... but I could've sworn that Repco sold belts for older cars as well as newer ones? I wonder if there's anything you can adapt that went on a Holden here?

[I have a sorta-similar problem ... I want Volvo buckles, especially as they plug into the handbrake-surround console. Volvo wants $$$$$ for them ... but it's hard to get really good nick used belts in 2dr length. My belts are a standard width though, at least]
Soft roaders represent an excellent compromise between the needs of the hardcore 4x4 user and the convenience of a city hatchback. Its clear to see why they have become so popular in todays society.

Tex, an extra 20mm would seem like shit all if, god forbid, they ever got used as intended. I'm sure the bruise on your belly would be a 'lighter shade of pale' in comparison to something 20mm thinner when thats all thats stopping you going throught the windscreen ...

Thraxter: Have you tried autoone/repco any spare parts place? You should be able to buy new seatbelts to suit your car.

A company called Klippan make new belts for all old cars.
