    oppinions on timing chain replacement

    just after some oppinions. if someone rebuilt the bottom end i.e(rings brarings and seals) and didnt replace the timing chains would this be a dodgy job?

    just a family 'dissagreement'

    the engine is an 18rgu

        No comments to share on the avatar but back to the engine....
        it really depends on who asked who to do what.

        If the customer asked for a complete rebuild then it is dodgy but if they said something like "Just replace what you think needs doing" then it is left up to the rebuilder to decide what gets replaced.

        The rebuilder may decide on the side of caution and replace the chains then cop abuse for wasting money or they may decide to save the customer money (or quote low to get the job) and just inspect them and only replace them if they are totally shot but leave them if they are just a bit worn.

        Not an easy one to call.
        For what it is worth I would have replaced them since the labour needed is pretty small and the cost is minor as part of a total rebuild.
        No doubt other would have different opinions.
