With any sort of ring problem, you are going to either be blowing smoke, or have lots of blow-by into the crankcase. If you have neither, and nothing else appears to be obviously wrong except a slight loss of power, the valve theory sounds pretty much the best bet.

Also, some mitsus used a little 3rd valve for EGR purposes which sometimes crap out and burn away. does the 4G93 use these? if so, unscrew them all and check the ends. I have gutted them before and braized up all the holes as these things caused a LOT of problems in things like L300's and express vans.
Sorry but im not that familiar on "modern" mitsus... I suspect they did away with those poxy EGR valves on the twin cam heads...Turns out, far too much has been written about great men and not nearly enough about morons
