    Telstar Mods?

I have just aquired an imaculate red 1989 Ford Telstar GHIA I am having a hard time finding sites relating to this particular make, I was wondering what are some good mods to perform on this car, the obvious Air Filter, Exaust, etc... but what has been known to reap some good performance gains on this car and is it possible to strap a turbo onto this model easily because one of my friends said that there was room to put in a turbo, because the model was based on the TX5 Turbo.

    Cheers

Well Daniel I don’t think it would be to hard to find a turbo for your newly acquired ride as, not only does the car share the same engine as the TX5 Turbo but also the 626 Turbo and the MX6. So if you could source one of these cars at the wreckers equipped with a turbo and all the other bits, you could indeed turbo it quite cheaply.

However if you were going to go this way a better choice would be to just get a whole front cut, as turboing the N/A engine becomes exy especially if you become addicted to boost (because of the higher compression of the N/A head). Plus you could get rid of the slush box while you at it if you find a cut with a 5 speed .

In saying all this the turbo variants of this car only made 110kw at the fly form the factory, so you have to ask yourself is the extra 15kw worth the effort/money.

EDIT: you might want to check out www.mx6.com they'll know alot more about this issue than me.

Have also read that someone was making around 170kw @ the wheels with the turbo engine, so maybe it is worth the effort?

My mate had a Telstar TX5 with a 2.2L turbo, and while the car pulled a bit & had been rebuild about 30,000km's ago... i'd estimate only around 90-100kw @ wheels (around 6psi on boost). However I have a feeling he could've gained a lot more out of it if the care had received more care & attention to detail, rather than just on upgrading parts.

Why not stay NA and go the Jappa FE DOHC 16V motor!

There are turbo ones of these rollin about and they are insane!

Has miles more potential than the FE SOHC crapola's.

Sorry But it's just my 2 cents....

It will probably cost more than selling the car and buying a real turbo one to bring yours up to turbo specs.

If you want to do it you will have first have to find all the turbo gear, which should be alright on the NA one as the compression isnt really that high. No higher than some newer turbo engines.

Next problem is going to be drivetrain. The turbos box, shafts and hubs are different. This is really where is gets expensive, with a used turbo box costing over $1000, not to mention the problem of actually finding one.

Someone on mx6.com recently was selling an mx6 turbo with all the gear, but rear ended for a little over 1k, so that could have been an option. Have a look as there is some cheapies out there that could be a donor car.

          ---------------------------------

On the FE DOHC/ F2t SOHC debate, it goes on for ever. Really the DOHC with a turbo is if you really want to splash out and go big time. The yanks seem to be in to them, with a few cars running low 12's/11's and making 400+FWHP, but i dont think that is really the type of power you want to have in a front wheel drive with an open diff.

170 front wheel KW seems to be pretty doable from the 2.2litre on stock internals.
Sleak_mx6 on here did have 210+kw atw, but now runs the twin cam.

As for the single cam, I think for about $1500 it is possible to get one running mid 14's if it is in good condition with the a few selective mods. But traction is really going to suck anyway!

            I agree!

I was thinking about doing the FE DOHC swap a while back and gave myself an uppercut.....
went out & puchased a car with a turbo hanging off it already!

But when I get more moola I'd really love to tackle this idea in a mx6.....

            one day!

Mounts are the same, management will need something done e.g. standalone computer, unless the full FE DOHC wiring loom and computer can be found.

Gearbox will bolt up. Aircon, power steering and all other ancilaries run off the engine will bolt up. (all apparently's)

As for price. Hmm, depends how much work you are doing yourself I guess.
The engines seem to fetch about $1000, but that is only a very small part of it!

By the time you get "nickel & dimed to death", I can't see you walking out of a conversion like that for a helluva lot less than $2.5k-$3k, if you go to a workshop to do it. You could probably do it for less, but there're all these little things you always forget about or need ... eg. will it need a clutch, what's the fuel supply situation, blah blah blah.
Soft roaders represent an excellent compromise between the needs of the hardcore 4x4 user and the convenience of a city hatchback. Its clear to see why they have become so popular in todays society.

                    thanks guys

well after hearing this i am still deciding what to do with my car, I might just do some minor engine modifications, just not the big costers like engine conversions or turbos, just install a stereo and enjoy my car, due to my relative inexperience with cars I will try to learn some stuff along the way, I am about to spray my dash, I will put up some pictures soon for those that want to have a look, it was $2800 which I think is a pretty good buy for a good condition Telstar GHIA :D.

                    Thanks for all your help
                    Daniel

EDIT: This car is not going rice, I am spraing my dash due to personal taste, not because it is the newest Jap or american craze, do not lose faith :D I might do a nice SUB install but no undercar neons etc... It all comes down to taste in my opinion, I dont want a car that looks like a pack of wild dogs have ran through it but also I dont want my car to have so many flashy lights it looks like a christmas tree, leave these cars to HOT 4's and Auto Salon. I will make it G-O

I know I'm bringing this thread back to life.

But there is a guy selling FE DOHC on www.mx6.com under the Australian section. They are $800, and are the 10:1 compression versions, which had 170hp at the fly. Which if you are staying NA is a good upgrade for you. Plus with the added exhaust etc, you can get it going pretty quick and will keep up with the stock turbo MX6's etc.

Of course, you will still need an ECU, some people are using the EMS Stingers as they are pretty cheap if you do it yourself. Probably won't cost you much more than $2000 if you can sell you engine for a couple of hundred.
