Turns out, far too much has been written about great men and not nearly enough about morons

      Paint stripper then wire brush.

Clean it up with some sand paper and then deoxodise and hifill before putting on some colour.

Should come up better then new.

I would advise that you get the bonnet chemically dipped, but then you have to take the skin off the frame to ensure you get paint on everything.

Any ideas how much it would cost to get that done? I considered it but figured it would be too expensive for a budget job...

I assume you are talking about the bonnet dipping? Mine was just over $100, that removed all of the paint and rust and they left it with some goop on it that stopped it from rusting.

Probably saved a couple of days work and a tin of paint stripper as well.

do it yourself, its easy as.

just sand/strip it back, make it smooth - to about 600-800grit for final coat, and then spray.

for the rust, if its only surface rust then just grind/wire brush it back - then use a high fill primer and then sand the primer with 600/800grit wet sand. once that is done, spray the color.

For a car such as that you could even do a decent job with a spray can - most of the hard work is in the prep.

Dont be scared - worst case you have to sand it all again and start again! its not like you are going to ruin it all together!

Do it yourself - bodywork is easy - its just starting it that is hard! once you have done it once or seen someone do it, you'll realise that tasks such as the above are easy as!

                cheers,

                simon.

PS. post some piccies when you are done!

                  Leigh,

I have a decent gravity feed spray gun you can borrow if need be - You'll need to get yourself an air compressor though, something capable of around 8-12cfm from memory

                    Why do I own 2?
Because you're uglier than Secoh and want to be amongst your own kind? :D

But seriously.. the only ugly Mk2 Corona is a sedan when viewed from the back! The front is tough as... the the rear on the coupe looks great.

Would you believe that the guy who towed the wreck to my place used to own a coupe? Small world!

Back to the topic though... I got the rust repair panels outta the other car, so it's all coming along slowly! Brake upgrade soon too :D

Stenno - I may look at painting the engine bay myself, so that gun could come in handy if I can get my hands on a compressor. The outside I'll pay someone to do though!!

Nah, my panel beater did that, not too difficult though. Use some sealent type stuff to hold it together and you bend the skin over the frame.
