    Buying a spray gun

I'm thinking of buying a spray gun (my el-cheapo free one died), does anyone have any advice (apart from buy the best you can afford)?

    Gravity or suction feed?

I found a suction feed Iwata Star S770 with a 2mm nozzle for about $150 with the pot, is this a decent gun? Is 2mm too big for acrylic lacquers?

i used to have a suction/pot type. then i used a gravity fed and havent looked back. as im sure most people would when swaping to gravity fed.

2.0 is good for priming but its a little large for top coats. a 1.7 or 1.4mm tip is much more suited..
I was spraying with a 2.0 and it felt ok until i used a smaller tip and realize how much easier it was to get a nice shine off the gun without getting runs. Its just that much easier to paint with.. you can slow down your hand and it just works out better..

go the gravity fed.. thats my opinion.

Thanks for that. A friend of mine who used to be a panel beater said the gravity fed ones were good as well, but the guy at the shop (Glenfords) thought that gravity fed ones weren't as good as they were less common than the suction ones, but he said he wasn't sure.

If you are interested in spending a little more than the $100-200 range, Sharpe in the US sell off their reco'd demo guns at reasonable prices.

I got a Sharpe Platinum HVLP for $400AUD inc freight (probably cost less now because our dollar is better).

Hmm, $400 is probably a bit much for a gun I'll probably use once a year if I'm lucky after this... I think I'd rather stick in the $100-200 range for now, but thanks for your input anyway

When you run out of paint with a suction feed it spits and platters paint everywhere! With gravity feed it just runs out plus its easier to see how full it is.

The HVLP guns normally eat lots of air to work and are shit when cheap, most require 20+cfm.
