    More dodgy chassis work?

I've only just had the chance to have a closer look at the latest work by the panelshop to fix the bits they "missed" on my car.

One problem was there was a kink in the left hand chassis rail. Now I was already a bit pissed off cos it had only been hammered straight, without anything being done to reinforce it at all.

Only now have I just discovered they did it by cutting a 3.5cm hole into the side of the chassis rail in the wheel arch, then hammering away from in there. When they were finished, they've just slapped a rubber grommet in the hole!

Can someone confirm for me that this is completely unacceptable? I am absoloutly furious with these people.

I would be concerned IF the hole has any sharp sections around it perimeter that may give rise to stress concentrations, which will nicely crack the rail. It looks ok though.

What you don't see from that side is that there is only a few cm of the rail left on eitherside of the hole, so yeah, we got stress concentrations. It's also a fairly rough hole, so again will reduce the endurance of the rail.

While it's probably strong enough in normal diving, think of how easily it will break should I be in an accident.

I seriously think thats a problem, personally, id have that properly straightened and plated to increase strength, i think you should try looking for a place that does chassis work like a body builder or a better panelshop that can pull that kink out.

The car should have been but on a chassis aligner & had the kink pulled out, & yeah, a rough cut hole like that in a chassis member is bodge.

In the photo under the guard, the panel above the rail appears to still be buckled, so I'd be concerned that the car isn't straight.

It seems to be hard to find a bodyshop willing to do good work, a good friend of mine recently had some rustrepair work done, & when I was doing some minor repairs on something else, I noticed that the backside of the patches that had been welded in were still bare untreated steel! So rough..

Hmm....will be having words with them tomorrow.

Even if it means it's going to cost me more to get it fixed, I think I'll just be taking it elsewhere. Thanks for the advice everyone.
