Sr20det makes tappety noise on acceleration

    Hi all,
Topic says it all, my bluebird attesa makes a kind of clicky tappety sound only when the engine rpm is increasing. More pronounced when the engine is cold, gets quieter as the oil heats up.

Once its up to normal temp you cant hear it at all when free revving but can hear it when accelerating under load.

This model doesnt have VVT (afaik black top east-west).

I have also noticed what i think is an exhaust leak between the head and manifold. The engine has a GT25 which is a VERY tight fit (block was ground slightly to fit the turbo). The turbo and motor are still touching, with heat this probably forced the leak to occur, not sure if this is the source of the noise though. I know there is a leak as the head between cylinders 2 and 3 is black and dirty.

hum dude. doesnt sound the best. altho

a zorst leek between the head and the zorst manafold can sound like a clicking . can get pritty loud too , i would take care of the simple things first,

yet this would happen most of the time . but just be louder when the engine is on load

It will be the exhaust leak by the symptoms you describe - broken exhaust studs are common on RB motors, unsure of SR motors though.

I had the same noise on my ca, which was a big end bearing.

It could also be the fact that you bought a car with rockers and a timing chain

But yeas it sounds like the ehxuast leak is a good place to start.

I hear big end bearings make less of a sound when under load, and makes a louder sound when under less load or free revving.

I also idled the motor and pulled each spark plug out once at a time which is supposedly supposed to stop the sound when the cylinder with the problem bearing isnt firing. It made the sound for every cylinder, so again points to an exhaust leak.
