    Devcon Steel/Aluminium Epoxy & Rocker cover temps

    Need to modify a rocker cover on a SOHC 4 cylinder to clear some new custom solid lifters, I would like to use one of Devcon's Aluminium or Steel epoxies to make the necessary modifications as i don't want to warp the cover by welding; but the max. operating temp of these epoxies is 120 deg C.
    Can rocker covers get this hot?

    Rocker covers can get a lot hotter than that. Being at the top of the motor they get little cooling from underbonnet air, and whatever air is up there is generally the hottest stuff. Perhaps you need to stick a temperature sensor on there and go for a drive on a hot day and find out.

    A friend of mine has used devcon to bog up a corrosion hole in the front of his (engine's) head. That held up pretty well, although maybe that part of the head wouldn't get as hot as the rocker cover might.

      Going to give JB weld a go, a lot cheaper than the Devcon stuff, $17 vs $95; although the devon is 500gms compared to JB weld which is 56gms.
      Supposedly the JB weld holds up to 300 deg C.
      Forgot to mention where i am repairing is on the intake side, so shouldn't get as hot as the exhaust side.

        Nice question. The FJ20 valve cover has a vent elbow factory fixed in it with what looks very much like epoxy. Want to turn the elbow to face the other way so the epoxy? will have to be busted.

          JB weld will be fine. Rough the surface (40 grit) and clean with acetone then spread a thin layer and work it into the roughened area, then when this has mostly gone off spread the greater amount. The second layer can be fortified with 'q' cells or phenolic microballoons if you want it to go a bit further. Or you could use talc powder, though it will be much tougher to sand.
