Any harm in using "stop smoke" oil additives

My motor can be a bit smokey at times, so I was just just wondering if there's any harm in using one of those stop smoke additives in the oil? I'm not really too concerned if it has a slightly bad effeect on the motor motor. Just as long as it lasts for another 6 months or so till I've built the new one.

How do these additives actually work?

Save your money DZ. Usually they are merely viscosity enhancers ie they make the oil thicker. There are some oils specifically available for worn engines, a better way to go IMHO.

        IMHO, they make things worse.

have had two cars that ive used these "wonder" additives and both engines went backwards quickly.

I just put some thicker oil in my L28 a coupel of weeks ago, no more smoke unless you really punish it.

It feels slightly more sluggish than before though

            Thanks all.
I think I'll run it as is for now and next time I change the oil I'll go a little thicker. It isn't much of a problem most of the time so it should be right for now.

They can make the engine a lot smokier on cold starts, that's been my experience, but do seem to help when the engine is warm.

But as others have said, bodgy..
