Ff the diff is still in the car, jack up one side of the car, so one wheel is off the ground. Next make sure its not in gear and that the handbrake is off. Then try and turn the wheel.

It should be pretty hard to turn but not impossible.

You really need to pull it apart and check the condition of the plates and make sure no lugs are broken off the plates.Different brands have differing amounts of plates like the nismo ones have 12 plates in total and os giken have 20.Another thing you can check is the wear pattern on the front and rear of the crown teeth aswell as the play.A lot of the japs just seem to bolt the centre straight in using whatever shims that were in there before and dont set them up.This can cause bad wear on the teeth and even if its setup properly in another housing they can still whine. You should be able to take it to a diff place with the cover off and they can stick some paint on the crown and tell you if its going to whine on acceleration or deceleration or both.
