    Cleaning oil galleries, Diesel Fuel?

    Hey all.

just a short question. I have alot of crap gunked up in my oil galleries of my astron II engine (mitsu sigma). Ive changed the oil countless times and ran some oil flush through to clean out the galleries. The oil flush seems to get some of the stuff out, but not all of it. A friend recommended to me that i use some diesel fuel as oil flush because its alot stronger and should clean out the galleries no problem.

Would this be a safe option?? Has anyone else tried this?

    thanks
    ag

Your friend has it wrong the "trick" is to run a diesel engine specific oil as they have a much higher level of detergent additive compared to petrol engine oils

I have heard of people running diesel (not diesel oil) for a couple of minutes in old VW motors to clean out the gunge.

      I have not tried it

Silent Bob has it wrong, run 'gun cleaner' or just regular mixing grade thinners as engine flush, only they have the gunk dissolving power necessary to REALLY get some of the built up gunk, dirt and metal shavings out of your engine.

ok sounds like thats what i need then. But thinners? i want to clean the engine! not destroy every single gasket and bearing in the engine! i might look into some solvents.

Note: I'm lying. Please for the sake of your engine DO NOT put gun clean or thinners into your engine. In all honesty, I wouldn't worry too much unless you have specific reason to think your oil galleries are clogged. Chances are you'll do more harm than good.

Spend your money on something else to make you feel better about your car, whether its a nice high quality wax or perhaps a steering wheel... Regardless of what some enthusiasists will insist, the astron motor will still go down in history as one of THE worst motors to be fitted to an australian car in the last 30 years.

Slightly off topic... but would running diesel oil for half an our help to clean out my hydraulic lifters? or am I best cleaning them out manually one at a time?

Hydraulic lifters are also my problem. But its due to blocked oil galleries in my situation, and yes i am sure of it. BTW i sorta got the idea that you werent serious mr hotgemini, hence my response! And as for the astron being the worst motor, i think not!

I didn't say the worst... Holden's Starfire four probably has that spot pegged, the JB camira motor and the Astron are right up there.

I've heard it mentioned (running on straight diesel fuel as the oil!) for something like minutes max. My dad told me about this one years ago - it was called a running rebuild. You'd let it idle until the revs started to pick up, drain and refill with oil.

And sell the bloody thing as soon as possible thereafter.

If you want to try it, do so at your own risk (I personally wouldn't with a gun at my head)

You neglect to mention the 7M.
