Starting a car thats been sitting for a while.

Sorry guys, this has been covered several times but I cant find the old threads.

Anyways, my brother has been in the USA for 6 months and now he tells me he has just left his car outside for this time with the battery still connected etc and asked me to go and drive it a bit. I had a look at it, battery was dead as could be expected so I tried to jump start it with my Rodeo however even with 14V across the battery it still wont crank.

Suggestions as to what this problem could be and any other tips on what I should check/change with a car that has been sitting this long would be great.

    Thanks

check the water in the battery and radiator, charge the battery, take the spark plugs out and wind the motor over one revolution by hand. if it turns over by hand, crank it until it gets oil pressure. then put the plugs back in and start the bastard.
Turns out, far too much has been written about great men and not nearly enough about morons

        it still wont crank ?

it couldnt be siezed could it ? i would doubt that after 6 months it would, but u never know.

as above : take the plugs out, make sure its all clean, make sure the fuel is fresh and give it another go.

if you paid less than $50 for the jumper leads throw them in the bin. most cheap leads are worse than useless.

No worries guys. I will try the above, thanks.

Time to see if maintenance on the VG30 is as fun as everyone says it isnt.

OK, I spent some time on the 300ZX however I sort of got side tracked and redid the butchered ignition wiring from a 20 year old car alarm installed with press fit crimp connectors and plaster tape. I also found a 10cm deep stagnant pool of rusty water collecting in the rear 1/4 panel which I drained out.

Suprisingly getting the water out of the wheel arch didnt help the car start, neither did the revised wiring however the I now noticed that I can get some sort of revolution out of the engine when attempting to start. Audibly you can hear probably one or less revolution of the starter and all the belts have moved somewhat, but thats it. At least this should mean the motor isnt seized.

Admittedly I havent removed the plugs but I dont think they will be a problem as to me this definately seems like an electical problem. Also just looking at the VG30 in the 300ZX engine bay and all the crap covering all the other crap which needs to be removed to remove anything else is too daunting to think about when I should be working on my own car.

As pointed out above, the jumper leads I am using arent the best, however they have served me fine in the past. I think I may swap the batteries around tomorrow and see if it is a current issue through the leads, but other than this, any ideas guys?

                Thanks

PS. What point is best to turn a motor over by hand?

spanner on the front pulley, or screwdriver in the fan bolts.

my money is on crappy jumper leads and flat battery in the car.

That what I was thinking/hoping, Cheers.

All going well, the next problem will be explaining why the car doesnt have an alarm or keyless entry anymore

Clean the battery terminals and the connectors and charge the battery for a day.

Clip the battery charger to the post of the battery rather than over the caonnectors.
