No oil getting to head in Datsun A12

I've just finished changing the head gasket on my A12 powered sunny and have found there's no oil getting to the head. Due to a few old ups and stuff arounds, the motor was sitting out of the car with the head off for a weeks. During this time it was not always covered up properly, so it's quite possible a hornet could have gone and built a nest in there somewhere. We didn't notice anything when assembling it though.

After a few minutes running (before I knew there was no oil) I noticed a knocking sound from the front of the motor. Could that be an indication that the bottom end isn't getting oil either? Is it even possible that something could have happened that would stop oil from getting to the bottom end?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Would I be correct in assuming that if the oil light is not on, the bottom end should be getting oil?

Just pulled the rocker cover off and gave it a run.....looks like it is getting oil after all. It just slowly drips from each rocker pedestal and runs down the push rods. Slowly, but enough that they're all coated....I assume (now) that's normal?

Oil feed to the tops of these is done via one of the rocker bolts.....centre one.
If you fit the wrong bolt in the incorrect spot the top won't get adequate feed.

Rocker bolts were never taken out of the rocker assembly, so they should be right. I think it's ok....but just to be sure I just need to know, what sort of quantity of oil should be running/dripping out from around the rockers?

As it is, at idle/low revs you can run it with the rocker cover off and there isn't any problem with oil flying everywhere.

The knocking from the front end sound like bearing noise from the water pump... I check that out in the next few days.
