    Oil cooler thermostat?

Hi all, i'm trying to work out some methods of running a remote oil filter & cooler on my 3sgte engine. As the turbo manifold looks like it will get in the way.

I've been recommended that when using a oil cooler to use a thermostat as the original 3sgte setup had water going through the base of the oil filter to keep temps in check.

Now i'm just a bit confused how this all works.. If I put some kind of sandwitch plate on which goes to say the oil filter, then to the oil cooler, then back to the sandwitch plate.. If I put a thermostat in there wouldn't the flow of oil be blocked? Or do the oil thermostats have some kind of bypass line?

    Thanks
    Joel

If your running an external oil cooler I wouldn't worry about a thermostat.

Check out the other thread running at the moment.

When you use an external oil cooler you can use a thermostat as it cang et oo cold, i have seen some jap kits that give u a aluminum slider that u slide over the cooler to restrict air flow to it.

What is it weather you are using a block on the engine to run the cooler (keep filter in stock location) or remote oil filter and use a seperate thermostadt, they work the same. They dont block the flow the just divert the from from the cooler straight back into the block.

Oil thermostats do always work on a bypass technique. It can't work like a water thermostat and block the oil flow!

I can't think of any good reason to *not* run a thermostat..

Ok. I didn't even know these thermostats existed. My oil temp always sat where I wanted it. Must have been lucky.

Thanks for the reply guys.. So are these thermostats something you can pickup from the wreckers or purchase new?

I ran a remote thermostat, $130 from rev race gear. There are ones available from several sources (capa, earl's etc) that use either a remote stand alone thermostat or one integrated into a sandwich plate.
