    rollcage for factory sunroof car

    hey guys.
during a ashphalt motorkhana i was in last saturday, an old fart from my club said i would have to install a rollcage in my car if i wanted to do autocrosses and khanacross'. just wondering if this was true or not?

car in question? a 74 BMW 525, the one from the $1000 challenge thread.

i guess if ths were true, then id definately have to install one to do laps on a circuit race eg winton/sandown etc?

    thanx in advance.

Depends on the event that you are running in. Most smaller events that don't involve car vs car racing only against the clock (dirt rallies excluded here), don't require a cage. Open days at the Sydney tracks don't require a cage, but once again it would depend on the event.

ahh yeah... it will be mainly dirt short track racing and ashphalt fun days until the $1000 challenge comes within a state from me.. no rallies or offroad events.

To enter into CAMS-officiated WARC/ARC events, I had to remove the sunroof from my car (and fill in the hole) before installing the `cage.

Will be different for smaller events though, I'm sure

motorkhanas and khanacross you do not need a roll cage as per cams manual. rallysprint you may though.

            Mr moparman,
was the motorkhana the bendigo sale yard dash??? if so i was there competing in the white datto sunny coupe, you wont need a roll cage to compete at a lower level, untill you get to events such as state championships, rallysprints perhaps etc, ive been competeing at winton for years without a cage, not probs. I'd still do it for saftey anyway, as the old saying goes, put a $20 helmet on a $20 head, same goes for roll cages. I would remove the glass from sunroof and put some tin in its place though.

must sound stupid (and sorry to hijack thread), but why cant a car with sunroof have a roll cage? does it physically not fit in (because the roof sits lower?), or only because you can no longer make use the sunroof?

in event of a roll over the first thing to break is the glass sunroof, thus leaving a big hole for you to stick your limbs through for next time the car is upside down to trim off for you. Basically thats it.

hey trav, yeah that was me in the green beemer at the saleyards.. so you were racing that wicked little sunny with tony skinner eh? i got some home movies of that thing, bloody unreal car! :worship:

as for the roof.. it doesnt have any glass in it, its actually a metal bit which slides underneath the roof when retracted.. is that what they call a moonroof then??

its not that the cage wont fit (the car is huge inside), ill only be racing low level club meets, moneys fairly tight, and the car isnt quick at all.. so having a cage isnt really high on my list of priorites.

anyways.. would ya call a vic state series autocross 'high level'?? i wanted to race it out at bagshot on april 10th

Presuming it's a CAMS sanctioned motorkhana, the need for roll over protection is covered by clause 1.10, section 1, Group 4H of the manual regarding motorkhana cars. The manual doesn't say you need it, so unless it's in the supp regs they'd have a hard time enforcing it.
There's no distinction between a club level event and anything up to and including the Australian Motorkhana Championship. The rule is the same at all levels.

                        Mr moparman,
I scruitineeredat a handfull of vic state autocross series at my home track in mooropna, we didnt specify in our supp regs that you needed roll over protection, i dont think bendigo will either but may be worth a phone call anyway,
Also would you mind if i grabed a copy of those home movies of the sale yard dash, that would be great if possible.
If so let me no when would be an appropiate time to catch up with you.
                        Cheers

I see Tony usually weekly, I dont know that Tony goes to the meetings though, at the moment i don't know if he'll be at the VCAS round, if you post it to me i can give it to him, I really hope it burns onto a cd or even just a Video tape, i may be at the meeting this thursday night if i go over to do some work for tony this week, not sure though, let me know if you want some money for the Vid,
                            Thanks mate.
