    Front wheel bearing life

What is the expected lifespan of front wheel bearings on typical RWD cars?

Other than running them dry and contaminating them with foreign substances which cause wear, are there any other causes of premature bearing wear?

How much additional wear does overtightening the bearings create?

    Cheers

In my VN Commodore they lasted to about 497 000 kms when I traded the car and were never touched.

      Cheers , Pete.

overtightening will kill bearings. it can cause the case hardening to come away and once that starts it is compounded every time the bearing passes over the damage.
Turns out, far too much has been written about great men and not nearly enough about morons

OK thats all I needed to know, for some strange reason I seem to recall hearing or reading somewhere that they should be replaced every 40,000

What's the likelyhood of problems due to overtightening by say 10-20Nm? How about undertightening by 10-20Nm?

nissan recomends the wheel bearings be repacked and hub seals replaced every 40,000km on their commercial/4x4 range (xtrail excluded)

My Daihatsu delta goes through a set a year- cos it is overweight and gets flogged senseless (ever seen a 5 tonne truck drifting...)

But loose is always better than tight. Within reason.

I had a mate rattle gun the hub nuts on an LJ torana (he didn't know any better) and it made it about 1 km- welded solid and spun the outers in the hub. Needed new spindles and hubs.
