    EFI fuel filter..necessary ?

Just wondering if a high pressure fuel filter is going to be necessary in my injected L28.

I have converted the car from carburettors to FI, and have an external surge tank and pump. I have put two filters in the low pressure lines going to the hi pressure pump (i.e one from the tank to the lift pump, then one from surge to high pressure). Will this be enough?

I think then the only reason to add a high pressure filter is in case the hi pressure pump suffers catastrophic failure and trys to send bits of itself through the injectors. I would imagine a simple mesh screen filter should be sufficient to remove particles of that magnitude.

    cheers

Low pressure carb style filters only filter out big chunks of stuff... i had two when my galant was weber powered an i still got bits of crap ending up in fuel bowls. I then used a efi style filter with one old carb type one and no more chunks of crap in the fuel bowl.

Moral of story use a proper efi filter. Especially if your running efi! If its a plastic filter is sucks, metal efi ones all the way.

Shit, isn't a V8 commode Ryco one only like $10 or so?

I've got this ultra-sexy Mallory filter that has dual inputs/outputs.. wasn't that cheap, but it looks good!

I would base my decision on the fact that every factory injected car ever built has one.

Or am I missing something :D

i was basing my post on the assumption that the low pressure filters you have added are high quality ones, not just standard carb style plastic jobbies. I would still add a high pressure filter anyway, as mentioned, they're not dear, and efi pumps are all designed to handle the restriction they pose.

On an older vehicle, with old fuel lines, i'd be inclined to run a simple low restriction filter of some sort on the return line before it goes into the surge tank, to catch any crud coming out of the lines. It might be overkill, but if your surge tank is permanently sealed like most peoples, then any dirt / debris / rust / whatever that *does* get in there, will be near impossible to get out again. Except of course by mr murphy's law, your HP pump will suck every single bit of crap out of the surge tank, into itself...
You'd probably only need to run that filter for a little while, maybe just the first few weeks or so, just as a bit of insurance.

Just to give you the Idea that you are doing the right thing - I had an Injector Jam open due to some crap in the fuel rail - it will make your car run like shit. Definitely get the best filter possible.

OK, I just got an EFI filter installed. I now have two low pressure filters and one EFI filter on the rail side, and one low pressure filter on the return side.

I dont even have a low pressure filter in my setup, Just have the pump filter bag in the fuel tank into my 3L surge tank then bosch pump through to my efi filter in the engine bay
