    anal retentive:

doesn't a "full time 4WD" have an open centre diff? (ie so it can be used full time without damage)

and a "part time 4WD" has a lockable centre diff that is only locked for the part of the time that you need it locked?

Almost. "Full time 4wd" vehicles usually have a viscous LSD for the centre diff. It's not locked, but it's not fully open either.
