That's not dodgy method. 'Twas the only way on my ALFA.

Ignoring the dodgy method of removing the harmonic balancer, does it soudn correct? Is there any need to adjust it?

The harmonic balancer HAS to come off.

The bolt that holds it on can be a real PITA to get off.
I have had to resort to the method described - the rattle gun wasn't good enough!

Once the balancer is off, just undo the bolts, remove sick one and refit new one - easy as.

Do remove the fan as it is much easier

Looks like I know what I am doing in the next few days then... finding some water pipe to put on the breaker bar :D
