    Gearbox leaking oil. FWD. Question

    Car is a 1.6 supercharged FWD non-LSD.

Its leaking oil from the point where the gearbox and the axel (longer axel) joins. But it doesnt leak when stationary as I havent noticed any drips but when we jacked the car up, you could see a slight trail making its way down from the above mentioned point and has started to form at the bottom tip of gearbox. Also, there is a spray pattern to suggest it slatters around the place while moving.

There isnt much sign of much oil (maybe 80ml at best). Is there some sort of seal that is at the point where the axel and gearbox meet that might need replacing?

    Any help appreciated.

    Thanks

yep, sounds like the seal is stuffed.
it's a lot like a rear main seal for a crank, but is obviously suits the diameter of the driveshaft.
make sure it doesn't go in cocked to one side, otherwise it'll still leak.

Yeah sounds like the driveshaft seal's. They are easy as to change and cheap ($10-$20). Just drain oil, remove driveshaft from gearbox end, pull out old seal and put in new one. Job Done!

Its the 'drain oil' part that is expensive as its got $100 worth of redline in it. Also, not sure if I can be arsed taking out the shaft myself either so it can get expensive pretty quick. I might see now just how much oil I've lost and then decide.

        Thanks guys for input

Ok, took off the box filler cap and a fwe drops of oil poured out which means its pretty much full. I can remember when I filled it up, I overfilled it by perhaps 100ml. Could this have caused the seal to burst?

Ok, maybe its the dickhead that changed that side CV boot who didnt fit it on properly. I'll have to look into it but no big concern given the slowness of the leak.

              Cheers

Could always drain the oil into a clean container, filter it and reuse.

Drain the oil into a container a reuse afterall it is gearbox oil, if you dont fix it soon it will get worse and you will lose your expensive oil anyway.

Oh overfilling can cause leakage but only really if the breather is blocked.

Oh shit, I forgot all about the breather. I can remember way way back that this could be an issue, I should check that soon.

                    Thanks for that Glenno!
