    MX83 Cressida Master Cylinder Upgrade Question

    Hey all, question is about my Cressida, as seen in My-MX83-1JZ-GTE-Progress
    So the situation is that years ago we have added BA Falcon Rotors (and spacer ring) and R33GTSt Front Calipers to the braking system of the car. It is otherwise original ABS equipped 1991 MX83 Cressida Grande spec, as we haven't changed the rear brakes at all. The Master Cylinder itself appears to be functioning fine. The Problem is the plastic reservoir on top of the MC has flaked off about 3/4 of the thickness of plastic that was on there, and appears pretty close to failure. Toyota has apparently obsoleted the Master Cylinder, but I found the local independent Toyota parts specialist had an MC listed for Cressida in stock. Problem was it was a 1 inch bore, where the one on the car is 1 1/16 bore.

    Now I would consider it just about ok to substitute the smaller bore cylinder if the car was still using the original front Calipers, But this car has the Nissan Sumitomo 4 piston Calipers, which makes me think it may already be borderline at the 1 1/16 bore, let alone reducing the bore size. I gather the GTSt Calipers are a popular upgrade as it appeared to be a well worn path when I did it, has anyone got a lead on a suitable Master Cylinder that fits and is NOT obsolete, like the particular one on my car appears to be. I was suspecting that the Nissans that used the Calipers may also have used a similarly mounted, but bigger bore Master Cylinder. Does anyone have a line on this, as I am scratching my head on how to determine the answer? Failing that a good source of an undamaged reservoir piece, that I can use to make good the old master cylinder?

    The Sumitomos are fine on 1" masters. The original Cressida cylinder was 15/16", and felt ok with the Sumitomo calipers, but felt better with the 1" master.

    From memory one of the Hilux master cylinders also fits and is 1 1/16" bore.

      Thanks Chris that is the sort of info I was looking for. But mine has definitely got a big numeral 1 and a small 1/16 on it and looks different to the one at the parts place, in that both of the brake lines come out at different angles. The one on the car has the rear line coming out horizontally, but angled at 45 degrees toward the firewall, and the front line comes out of the MC vertically up from the front of the MC, whereas the supposed replacement part has both lines at 90 degrees towards the passenger side, horizontally.

        Yeah, sounds like yours is the later model again. Its the same as what they used on the early Tundras in the US, so you can get Dorman master cylinders through Amazon that fit. T100 from memory is the model code.

        That said the 1" masters are sufficient, even with Sumitomos.

            I did the same brake upgrade on my Supra and the calipers were fine with the original 15/16" master, although I've since upgraded to a 1" master. I don't think a 1 1/16" master is in any way necessary.

            I remember doing the calculations when I did the upgrade and the combined surface area of the 4 pistons in the R33 caliper was nearly the same as the single piston in the original Supra caliper. So that would be why upgrading the master wasn't necessary. I'd bet it's a similar story with your MX83.

              Master has the level sensor in the cap. I'd be just as happy if I could buy the reservoir on its own, but whatever keeps the poor old beaten up daily in use is fine. I think we might just have put the Master from the Front Cut on there, I really don't remember.

                  They won't be supplying that... amayama has turned to poo lately
                  Same resi used on dozens of toyos... or close enough
                  Most have the same bolt spacing even if they look slightly different
                  just hit up a wreckers

                    yeah went to get a 2nd hand master off an mx83 at the local, they were yeah nah we just crush em now. Might have to broaden the search to all the Toyotas they have.

                        Went back to wreckers today, looked at all likely donor cars to see if I could get a reservoir, no dice. Went to the local independent parts place with the almost correct master cylinder, bought it, robbed out the reservoir and installed it on the existing master cylinder. They had this cylinder listed as for an 80 series Cruiser, and an alternative to the obsolete one for Cressida. Which explained why they had one on hand. Meh, seems to have worked.
